There's a new movie being released in June called "Lola Versus" starring Greta Gerwig as the lead character---a 29 year old woman dealing with issues of sex and intimacy after her planned wedding is called off. What raised my hackles was a quote from the director Daryl Wein:"America, to get all grandiose and political, has always been very conservative when it comes to sex. Violence gets PG-13 rating--look at 'Hunger Games'. We get an R and we don't even show nudity. There are a few F-words and few sex scenes specifically shot to not show nudity." So Wein is identifying the issue--America is afraid of sex---and then proudly announces he is going to remain part of the problem, not the solution. His star Greta Gerwig has done a number of nude roles, including full frontal. But this dork of a director(who co-wrote the script with his real-life partner Zoe Lister-Jones), while loudly proclaiming how realistic & edgy his movie is, then shys away from how two people really look to each other when they are making love. Can you imagine what the great American directors of the 60's & 70's(Altman, Scorsese, De Palma, Mike Nichols) would make of such an attitude? Some people on this board think the reason modern Hollywood films have pulled back from the groundbreaking openness of a generation ago is there has been some gay and/or radical feminist takeover of Hollywood. I think the reason is the current crop of heterosexual directors don't have any balls.

maybe its a hodgepodge of both. however i do agree with the absence of a set. hollywood in general has become an industry of whiney overpaid selfindulgent pussies just looking for a payday and absolutely no respect for their positions in life. at least the stars of the past had the sense to realize that some class was a good thing. but what do you expect when kardashians and their ilk become famous celebrities instead of of just the infamous scumbags that they actually are. blame it on the younger generation. for all their technical savvy none of them have any real understanding of life. when the shit hits the fan, they will get a rude awakening.

When people talk about that, they're generally referring to American made films. Foreign films don't have a problem with female nudity.

There are probably a lot of reasons, you're probably right about the "directors not having any balls", but there are other reasons. The internet has now made female nudity redundant and it's not a box office draw anymore when you can easily see it on line (and fewer actresses are willing to do it because of that). Also maybe because of proliferation of porn, female nudity seems to be out of style now. It seems to be stigmitized as "dirty, exploitive, and disrespectful of women". Male nudity is usually presented as "comical", which is more acceptable than the "pornogrpahic sexy nudity" usually done by women. I don't really think it's a feminist/gay agenda, but there does seem to be a move towards film makers targeting females and the gay auidences with their nude scenes, and they don't have "the balls" to challenge social norms that female nudity is not pornographic or dirty (and they're afraid of offending their audience).
