Let's list sites where files can be uploaded for sharing. Comment on the pros and cons of the various sites if you'd like.

I've been pretty happy so far with:

http://files.ww.com

fairly quick uploads and DL's of files up to 100MB

no pop-ups, no waiting.

They don't however allow rar files, and after a certain # or amount of downloading they seem to cut you off. But the site really doesn't specify what the limits are. It just stops working. That's my only complaint so far.

http://www.sendspace.com

I've been using it and have been pretty happy with the upload/download times so far. No annoying wait times for free downloads like RapidShare.

Up to 300 meg file sizes!

I've only uploaded .mov, .mp3 and .zip files to it, however, so I don't know if there are restrictions to file types right now.

First of all, why is nobody contributing? I know there have been more sites used than these.

Second, can we make this a "sticky" so that it will stay up at the top? It could be a useful thread.

I can't use the free function on rapidshare at the moment - does anyone else have this problem?

Apparently it doesn't particularly like certain ISP's like AOL and BT.

I gather you can get round it using a proxy server, but thats getting a bit technical for me. So any non-rapidshare links are much appreciated!!!
:D

CNet just launched their new service, particularly for quick and easy image uploads:

http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/

Looks pretty simple if you just want to upload images.

lix.in is a perfect website for keeping your files forever... for example, if you don't have a premium account in rapidshare, when you're given a link for your file, go and submit it in www.lix.in then you'll be given another link that will keep your file for very long time

Rapidshare.de nevers works! The files are always deleted or removed.

Rapidshare.com is OK. I know some people don't like it, but it is one of the biggest. If you are only going to pay for one premium subscription, it should be rapidshare.com or maybe megaupload.

For downloading files from rapidshare.com with no hassle, have a look at JDownloader from

www.jdownloader.org .

It takes a bit of effort to set up, but the results are worth it. It especially shines when you set the Monitor Clipboard option on and you want to download a group of files such as those non-clickable links on

http://softcoreheaven.blogspot.com/ .

Just highlight any single group (between blank lines) of links on S. H., and click Ctl-C to copy them to your clipboard. JDownloader will immediately import all those links into a single download group. Click the button at the bottom of JD's import window, and JD will effortlessly start downloading them one at a time till they're all done. And if they're pieces/parts that have to spliced together (those .001, .002, etc. thingies), JD can sometimes automate that also. While JD is downloading what you have already selected, you can add more.

For clickable links, of course the process is even easier: Just right click and select "Copy Link Location".

(Note: There is a completely different program with a similar name hosted at Sourceforge. Don't get confused. The one you want is from jdownloader.org.)

A small and simple program called Rapget is available from

http://www.rapget.com/en/index.html

As the name indicates, it was originally intended to make downloading from rapidshare easy. Currently it doesn't work with rapidshare, but does a fine job with megaupload. It can also monitor the clipboard for quick and easy importing, but it doesn't do fancy stuff such as splicing.

For that, you will find HJsplit useful. Get it from:

http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/

BTW, all of these gems are freeware.
